    Parking lots as power plants

Posted by Cecilia under: Economy; Energy .

Solar power can be generated in a variety of ways.  The conventional way is generating solar energy through photovoltaic solar panels on rooftops.

Envision Solar, a company in San Diego CA, has come up with another unique way of generating solar power.

Their Solar Grove system turns parking lots into huge solar power generating surfaces.

The Solar Groves consist of “Solar Trees” each carrying 64 solar modules from Kyocera Solar.  One unit covers a 10 foot by 13 foot area.

Each Solar Tree produces over 17 kW of solar energy.  The trees can also be outfitted with bio-swales for filtering stormwater run-off.  Each Solar Tree provides shade for six vehicles.

Another benefit of Solar Trees is that it minimizes light-pollution by trapping parking lot night lights underneath the tree canopies while simultaneously lighting the parking lot.
