Rainwater harvesting enhances life

This week we heard Brad Lancaster speak in Santa Fe, New Mexico about rain harvesting and its numerous benefits for people, wildlife and landscaping.
Brad says that as a society we have become water-phobic. We were impressed how, in the course of an hour, one can change from a water-fearing to a water-caused person.
Lancaster showed that traditionally built houses are constructed in a way so as to dehydrate their surroundings by draining rainwater and household grey water. Well or municipal water must replace the free water which was carelessly drained away. This leads to a cycle of depletion that starves the soil, increases the risk of flooding, raises local temperatures and alters the local ecosystem.

Our homes can passively hydrate the landscape by harvesting and infiltrating rainwater, runoff and grey water on site. There very little need to pump additional drinkable well water for the landscaping. This system of rainwater harvesting leads to an enhancement of resources, reduced flooding, the return of native wildlife and beautiful landscaping.

Harvesting rainwater serves three goals: having an abundance of freely available water, creating a natural landscape and removing the threat of unnecessary flooding.
