Swiss Solar Boat Project
Posted by Cecilia under: Economy; Energy; Transportation .
Zurich, Switzerland has an innovative and eco-friendly boat ride on Lake Zurich. For about $65 per hour up to 6 people can rent a boat powered completely by solar energy.
The solar boats are equipped with microcrystalline thin-film solar cells (website only in German) which were installed under glass in the surface of the boats. Each boat has 8 compact batteries that provide enough power for 5 hour rides even when it’s cloudy.

This solar boat makes the most of the water, wind and sunshine on Lake Zurich. With its stylish design, open seating and sunbathing deck it has become one of the most popular boat rentals on the Lake Zurich. People can glide across the lake without engine noise, unpleasant fumes and without any oars or pedals.
The original goal of the project was to present to the public ways solar energy can be integrated into daily life and small business. Mission accomplished.
