New Mexico Green Home of the Year award
Posted by Cecilia under: Energy; Environment; Home .
Santa Fe architect Mark Chalom designed Susan and Richard Bechtold’s residence as a green home. Now, thanks to its impressive features, the home has earned Chalom the top-level Gold certification under Build Green New Mexico.
The house is sited carefully on the land to take advantage of New Mexico’s numerous sunny days. Solar energy is used for heating and is kept to a minimum thanks to superior insulation techniques combined with thermal mass adobe walls.
Other green features are the rainwater harvesting system for household water and the expanded use of nontoxic materials.
The Green Home of the Year award program honors green buildings which demonstrate energy and water efficiency, and take into consideration lot design, use of materials, indoor environmental quality, homeowner education and environmental impact.
