Hydrosol II produces first solar powered hydrogen
Posted by Cecilia under: Energy; Transportation .
Hydrogen is an attractive source of alternative energy, but the cost of production makes it economically impractical. The technological challenge is to produce hydrogen simply and cheaply.
The Sun is the most abundant source of energy on the planet. Hydrosol II is a pilot plant in the desert of Almeria, Spain that uses solar energy to produce hydrogen in a renewable CO2-free way.
The plant consists of a single tower and hundreds of sunlight directing mirrors. The concentrated sunlight is directed toward a reactor made of specially coated solar absorbers that enable it to split water - and thus to produce hydrogen in a CO2-free way.
The successful production of hydrogen from solar marks an important milestone in this direction.
