Waterwise guide to washing machines
Posted by Cecilia under: Economy; Energy; Environment; Home .
Conventional washing machines consume more household water than any other appliance except the toilet. Since water use is one of the major concerns of sustainable living it’s important to make sure that your washing machine is as waterwise as possible.
A front-loading washing machine is gentler on fabrics and uses less water because it allows clothes to “fall” as they spin.
A well-known guide to a waterwise washing machine is to buy a model with the Energy Star Label. When you purchase a new model look for answers to the following questions:
- How many gallons of water per load will I save compared to the older model of this machine and compared to my actual model?
- Does this model have a water-saver option to allow rinse water to be reused?
- Does this model automatically adjust the water level needed for the load to be washed?
On the maintenance side, it’s important to make sure that your washing machine isn’t leaking. In daily use, washing full loads saves water in the long run and shutting off the option for “extra rinse” will save water and still leave your clothes clean and rinsed.
Every gallon of water you conserve not only helps the environment, it will reduce your monthly water bill.
