How to dispose grease and fat properly
Posted by Cecilia under: Environment; Home .
If you want to use kitchen waste-water as grey water for irrigating your plants and vegetable garden there are some precautions you have to take about what you flush down your kitchen sink. Grey water used for irrigation shouldn’t contain oil and grease. There are several ways you can dispose of grease and fat properly without just flushing them down the sink.
Oil that was used for deep-frying can usually be reused twice or even more times. You can strain it into a clean sealable container and reuse it until you see that the oil darkens in color and takes on food odors.
When it’s time to throw the oil away pour it into a strong sealable container. An old plastic jar with a lid or even a cardboard milk carton will work fine. You can put the sealed jar or milk carton in the trash as long as the amount of oil isn’t too large.
Another solution is to ask a local restaurant if you can add your used oil to their grease bin. Some restaurants are happy to accomodate because they’re actually paid to recycle grease.
Small amounts of cooking oil can also be composted with other organic material in a compost heap with earthworm populations.
Proper disposal of oil is important for healthy grey water.
