Backup power systems with renewable energy
Posted by Cecilia under: Uncategorized .
If you’re interested in having a renewable energy backup power system there are some things you need to consider.
First of all, you should keep in mind that a home designed to run from photovoltaic power alone uses about 10-20% of the electricity of a conventional grid-tied home. This means that during a power outage, a solar backup solution is not enough to fully power a traditional grid-tied home.
However, you can still keep much of your house running during an outage. Depending upon your goals and budget you can choose a size that suits your needs.
A Solar Micro System is a small independent PV/battery power system for lights, computers and most of your appliances except a refrigerator. The benefits of this system are low initial cost, it provides basic energy needs, it’s portable and with available sun it generates power indefinitely.
The Whole House System is a much more powerful system and utilizes either a PV power system, a generator or a combination of the two. A battery bank provides longer-term power storage.
With either system, you’ll still be without many primary needs, such as electric heat or hot water. The more you can reduce your energy needs and replace old appliances with high efficiency models, the more coverage you’ll get from an alternative backup power system.
