Energy harvesting methods
Posted by Cecilia under: Economy; Energy .
Customers of the Sainsbury Supermarket in Gloucester, UK generate electricity for the supermarket just by driving into the parking lot. When cars roll over metal plates they activate pressure-sensitive piezo crystals which generate electricity. The panels were designed by British company Highway Energy Systems.
Another application of piezo crystals was developed by a German company called Enocean. Household light switches equipped with piezo crystals generate electricity when pressed.
Piezo crystals can also be installed beneath the floor of discos like the Surya Disco in London, where dancers generate electricity for the disco lights. The Innovatech company of Israel has plan to use train trails, public streets and airstrips to generate electricity through Piezo crystals.
This kind of motion energy generation is called Energy Harvesting. Researchers see endless possibilities to harvest energy through vibrations, motions and temperature differences.
